But just when you think you've understood the rhythm, a beat is suddenly missing.

Silence.

The Musical Experiment

"The Song Without a Beat" explores the perception of rhythm and musical expectation.

Initially, the composition deliberately foregoes a stable, immediately recognizable beat. Breath, steps, knocking, voice, and silence appear at irregular intervals and in rhythmic groupings.

Gradually, these seemingly independent elements begin to communicate with each other. A common pulse develops from the disorder until the individual sound events finally transition into a powerful groove.

Even after that, the experiment continues to play with the listener's expectations: an anticipated beat can disappear, silence momentarily takes its place – and the returning rhythm gains additional impact as a result.

Experiment 04 asks the question: When does a sequence of sounds actually become rhythm?
